EU hails US-Iran deal to end war

President of the European Council, António Costa, on Monday expressed support for a newly announced agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the war in the Middle East, saying the European Union was prepared to assist efforts toward what he described as “lasting peace”.

In a post on X, Costa said, “I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Costa, the European Council President, wrote on X.

According to statements from Washington and Tehran, both sides have reached a comprehensive understanding to halt hostilities across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, and to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

However, the agreement reportedly leaves unresolved the sensitive issue of Iran’s nuclear programme.

Officials from the United States and Iran also indicated that the deal is expected to be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland, a development that would mark a significant step toward ending months of conflict that have claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global energy supplies.

While full details of the agreement remain undisclosed, Donald Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, would be reopened following the planned signing ceremony on Friday.

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump wrote on Sunday via Truth Social as he marked his 80th birthday.

“Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorise the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorise the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow! “
