UK Euromillions winner dies in suspected hit-and-run crash

A Euromillions winner in England, United Kingdom, who had previously saved a police officer’s life just days before claiming a £1m jackpot, has died following a suspected hit-and-run.

Father-of-two Anthony Canty, 39, was cycling in Tiptree, Essex, on 21 May when he was struck by a vehicle. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died four days later.

Canty, a water supply worker, had earlier been hailed a hero after administering CPR to a police officer who collapsed on a bus in April 2020.

Shortly after that act of bravery, he went on to win a substantial Euromillions prize.

According to Essex Police, an 18-year-old male driver of a Ford Ka was arrested in connection with the incident after allegedly leaving the scene on Maldon Road at around 06:30 BST. He was later released while under investigation.

Officers said the suspect was initially detained on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene.

“He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue,” a police spokesman said, as he appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Canty, who lived in Maldon, had won the Euromillions alongside his partner Katie Sullivan on 5 May 2020, only days after his life-saving intervention.

The couple were previously pictured celebrating with champagne while holding their oversized cheque, with Canty later saying he intended to continue working despite the win.

Police have urged anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the collision to assist the ongoing investigation.
