Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after the defender ended his long-standing association with Liverpool.

According to BBC Sport on Friday, the 32-year-old left-back will officially become a Spurs player on July 1 following the expiration of his Liverpool contract, drawing the curtain on an impressive seven-year stay at Anfield.

Robertson had earlier disclosed plans to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, paving the way for Tottenham to land the experienced defender without paying a transfer fee.

Spurs had initially pushed to sign the Scotland international during the January transfer window while Thomas Frank was still in charge.

Although both clubs reportedly agreed on a deal, Liverpool later pulled out after they were unable to bring Kostas Tsimikas back from his loan spell with Roma.

Tottenham eventually preserved their Premier League status on the final day of the campaign under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who expressed delight over Robertson’s arrival.

“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi said.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”

Robertson moved to Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and established himself as one of the club’s most dependable players, making 378 appearances in all competitions.

During his time at Anfield, he lifted two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

The veteran defender also remains an influential figure for Scotland and is expected to captain his country at this summer’s World Cup, having already earned 92 international caps.

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange also hailed the signing, describing Robertson as a player with proven pedigree and leadership qualities.

“His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for – and won major honours,” Lange said.

“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.”

Robertson is among Tottenham’s earliest major additions ahead of the new campaign as De Zerbi seeks to rebuild the squad and steer the club towards a stronger Premier League showing.
