De Zerbi inspired my Tottenham move, says Tonali

Italy midfielder, Sandro Tonali, has revealed that the opportunity to reunite with Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was the biggest influence behind his decision to leave Newcastle United for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italian international explained that De Zerbi’s presence at Spurs, coupled with personal and family considerations, convinced him to make the switch after spending three seasons at Newcastle.

The move is expected to rank among Tottenham’s most expensive signings as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking before travelling to London for his medical, Tonali reflected on the negotiations that led to the transfer and praised his former club for handling the process professionally.

“It took a while. We had a sort of agreement with Newcastle; we spoke every day and we got it done.

“They wanted the best for me, we wanted the best deal for them. We parted on excellent terms, everyone is happy and I’m ready for this new adventure.”

Discussing why he chose Tottenham, Tonali said, “Why Tottenham? De Zerbi played a big part in this, and after three years at Newcastle it was also a life and family decision.

“De Zerbi deserves a lot of credit, not just as someone from Brescia and a friend, but also as a hard worker – he’s really committed to this. Returning to Serie A? There was never an opportunity to come back to Italy.”

Tonali leaves Newcastle after making 110 appearances across all competitions, contributing 10 goals and 10 assists during his time at the club.

The 26-year-old is set to become Tottenham’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window, joining newcomers Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Martin Dúbravka and Mateus Fernandes as De Zerbi reshapes Spurs’ squad.
