Konate to depart Liverpool after contract talks collapse

France defender, Ibrahima Konate, is reportedly set to leave Liverpool after five years at Anfield, according to Sky Sports.

The 27-year-old had been engaged in contract extension talks with the Reds, but both parties were unable to reach an agreement over a new deal, paving the way for the Frenchman to depart on a free transfer.

Konate has attracted interest from several top European clubs in recent months, although the France international is yet to make a final decision regarding his next destination.

Since joining Liverpool from German club RB Leipzig, Konate has made 183 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the Premier League title, the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.

Liverpool are now expected to strengthen their defence and midfield ahead of next season.

The club are believed to be targeting another holding midfielder to provide competition and support for Ryan Gravenberch.

The Reds are also preparing to welcome French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes in a £60m deal this summer.

The youngster, who will join before turning 21, is set to become Liverpool’s second-most expensive defensive signing.

However, Jacquet missed the closing stages of the season due to a shoulder injury, while Italian defender Geovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL injury.

Despite Konate’s expected exit, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk remains at the club, while England defender Joe Gomez, who has one year left on his contract, could also face an uncertain future amid possible defensive reshuffling.

Liverpool may also need reinforcement at left-back following Scotland captain Andy Robertson’s apparent farewell, although Greece international Kostas Tsimikas is expected to return after his loan spell.
