Political tensions won’t stop Rivers projects, says Fubara

Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured residents that ongoing infrastructure projects across the state will not be abandoned despite recent political developments.

The governor gave the assurance on Friday during an inspection of the ongoing Airport Road Bypass project in Port Harcourt, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to governance and project delivery.

According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, the road project has reached about 65 per cent completion.

Fubara expressed confidence that all projects initiated by his administration would be completed.

“I want to assure our people that notwithstanding the situation of things, one thing that I can promise everyone is that every good work that we have started, by the special grace of God, will continue and we will complete them. We’re in high spirits. Like we always say, Rivers First,” the governor stated.

Speaking on the importance of the Airport Road Bypass, Fubara explained that the project was conceived to provide an alternative route to the Port Harcourt International Airport during periods of disruption along the main airport road.

He noted that community protests and disputes had, in the past, hindered movement to the airport and affected economic activities in the state.

“We’ve always had these issues where the community may want to express their anger or dissatisfaction over some activities of the airport authorities, and in the process, they always block the airport road,” he said.

“We thought that in this modern society, such actions are not necessary anymore because whenever it happens, it affects the economic activities of the state. So, we liaised with the community and created this bypass,” Fubara added.

The governor, who was taken around the project site by contractors, expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and disclosed that the road project is expected to be completed before October 2026.

Fubara’s remarks come amid political developments in Rivers State, following the emergence of Kingsley Chinda as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 elections.

Chinda reportedly emerged unopposed after Fubara, businessman Tonye Cole, and other aspirants withdrew from the APC primary.

The Rivers governor has also been involved in a prolonged political rift with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, a development that has shaped political activities in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
