The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed 1,542 operatives across the state’s three senatorial districts to bolster security ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The State Commandant, Saidi Akintayo, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the command headquarters in Benin City, saying the deployment is aimed at ensuring safety before, during, and after the Muslim festival.
Akintayo explained that the move followed directives from the NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, and aligns with the agency’s constitutional responsibility to protect lives, critical national assets, and infrastructure.
“The deployment is part of our commitment to maintaining peace and safeguarding residents throughout the festive period,” he said.
According to him, the operation involves personnel drawn from several specialised units, including the Tactical Team, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Intelligence and Investigation Department, Armed Squad, Agro Rangers, and the Operations Department.
He added that officers have been strategically stationed at Eid prayer grounds, markets, motor parks, highways, recreational centres, places of worship, and other vulnerable locations across the state.
“We have positioned our personnel in key areas to guarantee a peaceful and hitch-free celebration for all residents,” Akintayo stated.
The commandant also directed area commanders, divisional officers, and heads of formations to strengthen surveillance, patrols, and intelligence gathering within their jurisdictions to prevent criminal activities during the festivities.
Commending Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for supporting security agencies, Akintayo noted that the assistance had improved operational efficiency and contributed to the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.
He further applauded the collaboration among security agencies, describing inter-agency cooperation as vital to maintaining law and order.
Issuing a warning to criminal elements, the NSCDC boss stressed that the command would take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt peace in Edo State.
“Those with criminal intentions should stay away from Edo State because the command is fully prepared to deal decisively with lawbreakers,” he warned.
Akintayo also urged residents to remain security conscious and support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities within their communities.
He congratulated Muslim faithful on the Eid-el-Kabir celebration and encouraged them to embrace values such as sacrifice, peace, tolerance, unity, and love associated with the festival.
