Former Real Madrid head coach, Xabi Alonso, has reportedly held direct talks with Chelsea F.C. over becoming the club’s next permanent manager, with a final decision expected within days.
Chelsea head into Saturday’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City F.C. with youth team coach Calum McFarlane still serving as interim manager.
The Stamford Bridge club have been without a permanent boss since Liam Rosenior was dismissed in April, the second managerial exit of the season following Enzo Maresca’s surprise departure during the festive period.
Chelsea are believed to have made Alonso, who previously coached Bayer 04 Leverkusen and managed Real Madrid’s youth setup, their leading candidate for the role.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, speaking via Football Transfers, said discussions between Chelsea and Alonso are progressing rapidly.
“Chelsea have had a direct meeting with Xabi Alonso and final decision is expected very soon,” he explained on X.
“They plan to announce their next manager before the World Cup, talks are accelerating.
“Chelsea also spoke to Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva as part of their list.”
Appointing Alonso would be a major coup for Chelsea, although the Spaniard is reportedly undecided over whether to move to West London or wait for a potential opportunity at Liverpool F.C..
Aston Villa F.C.’s 4-2 win over Liverpool on Friday has further increased pressure on Reds manager Arne Slot.
While Liverpool’s hierarchy are yet to indicate any intention to part ways with Slot, the club’s recent poor form has led to growing criticism from supporters.
Failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League on the final day of the season could place the Dutchman under even greater pressure.
