Brentford defender Michael Kayode prioritises Italy over Nigeria

Brentford F.C. defender, Michael Kayode, has reiterated his intention to wait for a senior call-up from the Italy national football team, despite still being eligible to represent Nigeria at international level.

The 21-year-old, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, remains eligible for both countries but says his long-term ambition is to feature for Italy’s senior side.

Kayode has already represented Italy at youth level and insists his commitment to the Azzurri remains unchanged.

“I will always give priority to Italy: even at youth level, I grew up wearing the Azzurri shirt,” Kayode told Tuttosport.

“I hope to achieve this dream as soon as possible, but I have no doubt about which path to choose.”

The defender also revealed he held discussions with former Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso ahead of the World Cup play-off in March, although he ultimately missed out on selection.

“Yes, we also had dinner with other [Italian] Premier League players,” Kayode admitted.

“I was doing well, I felt involved even without being called up for the play-offs.”
