La Liga: Getafe beat Mallorca 3–1 to boost European hopes

Getafe CF strengthened their push for European football with a convincing 3–1 win over a struggling RCD Mallorca at the Coliseum, a result that leaves José Bordalás’ side edging closer to continental qualification while deepening Mallorca’s relegation concerns.

The visitors, coached by Martín Demichelis, began brightly and tried to impose a direct, high-energy approach. Early on, Zito Luvumbo had the first real opening but failed to make proper contact after good work from Jan Virgili.

Both managers handed starts to young players, with Damián Cáceres featuring in midfield for Getafe and Luis Orejuela deployed at left-back for Mallorca.

The breakthrough came from a defensive lapse by Orejuela. His missed clearance allowed Allan Nyom to surge forward before delivering a low cross that Martín Satriano finished at the back post.

The veteran Nyom’s involvement drew loud reactions from the home crowd on one of his rare starts.

Mallorca’s response included a strong spell from Vedat Muriqi, who came agonisingly close when his header struck the underside of the bar following a corner.

However, just as they began to settle, another error proved costly. Confusion in defence between Orejuela and Martin Valjent allowed a long ball to bounce through, and Satriano pounced again to tap into an empty net after goalkeeper Leo Román was left stranded.

Getafe extended their control early in the second half, with Zaid Romero reacting quickest in a crowded box to bundle home a set-piece and make it 3–0. Mallorca briefly responded two minutes later when Omar Mascarell converted from a set play of their own, pulling one back at 3–1.

From there, the match lost its intensity as Getafe managed the tempo comfortably, limiting Mallorca to few clear chances.

The hosts closed out the game in control, securing a result that moves them four points clear in the race for seventh place and a potential UEFA Conference League spot.

For Mallorca, the defeat leaves them hovering just above the relegation zone, with their defensive errors once again proving decisive.

They now turn their attention to a crucial trip to face Levante, while Getafe prepare for another important clash against Elche as the battle for survival and Europe continues at both ends of the table.
