Team Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships have received a boost after the National Sports Commission reaffirmed its backing for the country’s athletes ahead of the competition in Accra, Ghana.
The continental championship begins on Tuesday and will run for six days, with Nigeria fielding a 41-member squad.
The team is made up of 17 male and 24 female athletes who are expected to compete across 26 track and field events as Nigeria aims to maintain its growing reputation in African athletics.
Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, urged the athletes to represent the country with courage, discipline and pride.
“Team Nigeria has continued to demonstrate tremendous growth and consistency on the continental and global stage, and we are confident that our athletes will make the country proud once again in Ghana,” Olopade declared.
“This championship is another opportunity to showcase the depth of talent we possess as a nation. We are particularly encouraged by the blend of experienced international stars and emerging young athletes in the team.”
Nigeria’s squad will be spearheaded by world record holder and women’s sprint hurdles star, Tobi Amusan, alongside a mix of home-based and foreign-based athletes already camped in Accra for the championship.
