Yamal waves Palestine flag during Barcelona’s La Liga title parade

Spanish teenage football sensation, Lamine Yamal, has drawn widespread praise from fans after showing public support for Palestine during FC Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations.

In clips widely circulating on social media on Monday, the 18-year-old was seen waving a Palestinian flag while riding on an open-top bus during the club’s victory parade through the streets of Barcelona.

The gesture was met with cheers from supporters who had gathered in large numbers to celebrate the champions.

Tens of thousands of fans lined the city’s streets as Barcelona marked their 29th La Liga title, secured after a 2-0 win over rivals Real Madrid in El Clásico on Sunday, a result that ultimately decided the championship race.

The celebrations capped a season in which the title was again determined in part by the outcome of Spain’s most famous fixture, with Barcelona edging out their long-time rivals.

Barcelona has also become a notable centre for pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Spain since the escalation of the Israel–Gaza conflict in October 2023.

The city has regularly hosted large protests and has been linked to maritime aid efforts aimed at delivering assistance to Gaza amid the ongoing blockade and conflict.

Yamal’s gesture during the parade has since sparked strong reactions online, with many fans praising the young forward for using a high-profile moment of celebration to express solidarity.
