Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has used his acceptance speech at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) to speak out against xenophobic attacks in South Africa, urging Africans to promote unity and reject violence against fellow Africans.
Speaking at the 12th edition of the AMVCA, where he received an Industry Merit Award, the actor reflected on the sacrifices of film practitioners across the continent and paid tribute to industry veterans.
“This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew. Even before 1992, many of us are no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on,” he said.
He also shared a personal reflection on longevity and sacrifice in the film industry, adding: “Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices.”
The actor used the platform to appeal for stronger support for African entertainment, urging international partners to sustain investment in the industry.
“I want to extend a hand of friendship to Canal+, please keep this going. This is one thing that unites the whole of Africa,” he added.
However, Kanayo’s speech also carried a strong political message as he condemned rising xenophobic violence in South Africa, calling on Africans to speak up against it.
“On this note, I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa,” he said.
Another Industry Merit Award recipient at the ceremony, veteran actress Sola Sobowale, also expressed gratitude to fans and colleagues, appreciating their support throughout her career.
The AMVCA 2026 ceremony once again brought together major figures in African film and television, celebrating excellence while also spotlighting issues affecting the continent’s creative community.
