LAWMA arrests three suspects over illegal waste dumping

The Lagos State Government has arrested three individuals for allegedly disposing of waste illegally in the Ketu-Alapere area as part of efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and curb indiscriminate dumping across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement shared on his X account on Sunday.

According to the commissioner, the arrests followed an overnight surveillance operation conducted between May 8 and 9, 2026, by the Lagos Waste Management Authority Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team in the Ketu-Alapere axis.

“During this operation, three individuals were apprehended for unlawfully disposing of waste in unauthorised locations. To deter further misconduct, they were all traced to their residences to investigate the motives behind their actions,” the statement read.

Wahab revealed that investigations carried out after the arrests showed that the affected residences lacked proper waste disposal arrangements and had not been registered with approved Private Sector Participant operators responsible for waste collection.

He said, “All documented properties have been forwarded to the LAWMA legal department for further legal action.”

The commissioner added that waste blackspots identified during the exercise had been cleared to discourage continued environmental violations in the area.

Wahab reiterated the state government’s resolve to enforce environmental laws and urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment and will continue to enforce sanitation regulations against violators,” he warned.
