The Lagos Waste Management Authority has removed street traders operating along road corridors and other unauthorised locations around Tafawa Balewa Square and the Costain Under Bridge/National Theatre axis.
According to The Punch, the exercise was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the enforcement was part of the agency’s continued efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness and safeguard public spaces.
He said the operation was also aimed at ensuring that “roads, walkways and other public areas were used for their intended purposes.”
Gbadegesin said the exercise, conducted in collaboration with Kick Against Indiscipline, “targeted street trading activities obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement and contributing to environmental nuisance along the affected corridors.”
The LAWMA boss cautioned traders against occupying road corridors, walkways and other unauthorised spaces, urging them to restrict their activities to designated and approved trading areas.
He stressed that keeping public spaces orderly required sustained compliance with environmental regulations.
Gbadegesin added that LAWMA would continue collaborating with relevant government agencies to tackle activities capable of undermining environmental standards and public order.
He also urged residents and other stakeholders to support the enforcement efforts by complying with established regulations and avoiding activities that obstruct public spaces or contribute to environmental degradation.
The LAWMA chief further said the agency would maintain monitoring of the affected areas to prevent the return of illegal trading activities and ensure continued compliance.
