Barcelona took a major step towards retaining their La Liga crown with a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Saturday, a result that also marked their first win at the Coliseum in six years.
First-half goals from Fermín López and substitute Marcus Rashford sealed the three points, extending Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to 11 points with just five matches remaining, including a crucial El Clásico against Real Madrid at Camp Nou on May 10.
Fermín broke the deadlock just before the interval and dedicated his strike to injured teammate Lamine Yamal, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a muscle injury but is targeting a return for Spain at the World Cup.
In a touching tribute, Fermín celebrated by crossing his arms and raising three fingers to mimic Yamal’s “304” gesture, a nod to the postal code of his hometown near Barcelona.
Rashford, introduced from the bench, put the result beyond doubt in the 74th minute with a fine solo finish, capping an efficient away display.
The victory ended Barcelona’s poor recent run at Getafe, where they had managed just one goal in their previous five visits, including four draws and a defeat since their last win in 2019.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid’s slim title hopes suffered another setback after Real Betis snatched a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw on Friday, leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s side facing the possibility of finishing another season without a major trophy despite the presence of Kylian Mbappé.
