Suspected thugs assault, strip Ondo LG chairman

The Chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, was on Monday reportedly attacked and stripped by suspected thugs shortly after resuming office following months of suspension.

Omolayo, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, had earlier been suspended by councillors over allegations of gross misconduct. His return to the council secretariat reportedly triggered tensions linked to unresolved disputes with some elected officials.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred when the chairman arrived at the secretariat to formally resume duties after about six months away from office.

“The moment he got there, some young men stormed the premises and blocked him from entering his office. It quickly escalated into an argument and then violence,” an eyewitness said.

The witness added that the attackers physically assaulted the chairman, tore his clothes, and left him nearly naked, causing panic across the secretariat.

“They beat him severely and stripped him. It was chaotic—people ran in different directions for safety while gunshots were fired into the air,” the source said.

Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Command said it had deployed officers to the scene to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, ordered an immediate response upon receiving reports of the incident.

“The command acted swiftly by sending personnel and operational assets to the area. Calm has since been restored, and normal activities have resumed,” Jimoh said.

He added that an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the violence and identify those responsible.

“We are working to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice,” he said.

Jimoh also urged residents to remain peaceful and continue their daily activities without fear, assuring them of the police’s commitment to maintaining security.
