A medical practitioner, Dr Ere Ogbachi, has died following complications that developed shortly after she delivered triplets in Bayelsa State.
The development was confirmed in a family statement signed by her brother, Meshack Sintei, and shared on Facebook on Wednesday.
The family said she was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa, where she passed away at about 2:45 am on Tuesday.
Dr Ogbachi, a registrar at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, was also a member of the Nigerian Medical Association and an alumna of Niger Delta University.
According to the family, she initially underwent a successful delivery of triplets before unforeseen medical complications set in, necessitating urgent transfer for intensive care.
“She successfully gave birth to triplets at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri… complications arose that eventually forced us to rush her to the Intensive Care Unit in FMC Yenagoa,” the statement said.
Describing the events that followed, the family said medical personnel made sustained efforts to save her life as her condition worsened.
“We watched her struggling to live, we watched her gasping for breath, we watched how the team of doctors and other experts in FMC kept trying their best to revive her,” it stated.
They further revealed that her oxygen saturation levels deteriorated rapidly during treatment.
“The SpO2 machine in the ICU began reading downwards from 70 to 50 and then to 0,” the statement said.
Sintei, in his account, expressed deep grief over the loss, describing her as both a dedicated physician and a new mother whose passing has left the family devastated.
“It was a painful experience… my beloved sister died at exactly 2:45 am on April 14th 2026. A generation has been lost, and the Sintei family mourns,” he said.
The statement concluded by describing her as someone who “was a fighter to the end,” while also appreciating those who supported the family during the tragic period.
