Police nab Bayelsa monarch’s son over alleged arson

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested Ibobuminaten Oweifa, son of the traditional ruler of Okodi Community in Ogbia Local Government Area, over the alleged attempted murder of a resident identified as Godgift Biko.

The arrest was confirmed by the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, in a video shared on Instagram by bussinessdaytelevison_ng.

According to the police, the incident occurred on June 24, 2026, after the suspect allegedly accused Biko of stealing plant wood. Oweifa was said to have tied the victim with wire before dousing him with fuel and setting him on fire with a lighter.

“On the 24th June, 2026, at about 19:05 hours, following a report… the DPO immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect,” Edebor said.

The commissioner disclosed that the victim was rescued and rushed to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

The police also noted that Biko was initially taken to a clinic in Okodi Community for first aid before receiving further medical attention.

Edebor said officers attached to the division promptly arrested the suspect and commenced investigations into the matter. He added that the case would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Condemning the incident, the police commissioner warned against resorting to violence and jungle justice.
