Nigeria’s Super Eagles will have another opportunity to chase continental glory following the official confirmation of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 schedule by the Confederation of African Football.
CAF announced on Tuesday that the tournament will run from June 19 to July 18, 2027, marking a return to a summer timetable. The competition will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The announcement comes amid the lingering controversy surrounding the 2025 AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco.
Senegal had originally been declared champions after defeating Morocco 1-0 in extra time in Rabat.
However, the result was later thrown into dispute after Morocco argued that Senegal should have forfeited the match when their players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a penalty decision.
CAF’s appeals jury later ruled in Morocco’s favour, awarding the hosts a 3-0 victory by default, a decision that sparked outrage in Senegal and across African football.
Senegal accused CAF of injustice and alleged corruption, while both countries have continued their legal battle over the outcome. The case is now before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Tensions between both countries had already been high before the final, with Senegal accusing Morocco of unfair treatment, poor security arrangements and inadequate ticket allocations for its supporters.
CAF rejected those complaints, insisting that all teams had been treated equally throughout the tournament.
Despite the controversy, CAF remains focused on preparations for the 2027 edition, with president Patrice Motsepe dismissing suggestions that the tournament could be delayed or moved from East Africa.
For Nigeria, the 2027 edition offers another chance to pursue a fourth AFCON title.
The Super Eagles, now coached by Eric Chelle, finished third at the last tournament and will be hoping to go even further in 2027.
