US weapons for Iran protesters were diverted, says Trump

President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States had tried to provide weapons to protesters in Iran, but claimed the arms never reached those they were intended for.

According to Trump, the weapons were meant to assist anti-government demonstrators in defending themselves against security forces.

“We sent guns, a lot of guns, they were supposed to go to the people so they could fight back against these thugs,” Trump told reporters during a White House Easter event.

“You know what happened? The people that they sent them to kept them,” Trump went on, adding: “So I’m very upset with a certain group of people, and they’re going to pay a big price for that.”

Trump did not identify the individuals or group he believed intercepted the weapons.

However, Fox News reported on Sunday that Trump pointed fingers at Kurdish intermediaries, accusing them of keeping weapons that had been meant for Iranian dissidents.
