The Anambra State Police Command has raised concerns over the increasing use of masked security personnel assigned to protect high-profile individuals in the state, warning that the trend poses significant security risks.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said concealing identities during routine or public-facing security assignments could create opportunities for criminal infiltration.
According to him, while certain operations may require tactical anonymity, the use of masks by security operatives outside authorised missions undermines public trust and accountability.
“The growing practice of security personnel hiding their identities, especially during VIP protection, makes it difficult to confirm their legitimacy and may be exploited by criminals to carry out unlawful activities,” Ikenga said.
He added that the development threatens not only public safety but also weakens coordination among security agencies operating within the state.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, emphasised the importance of proper identification for all personnel on routine or protective duties.
“Identifiable security operatives remain essential for effective collaboration among agencies and for maintaining public confidence in security operations,” Orutugu stated.
The police command, therefore, urged all security outfits in the state to ensure their operatives are clearly identifiable at all times, except in strictly approved tactical operations.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of lives and property across Anambra State.
