I love deeply but need balance, says Funke Akindele

Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has opened up about her personality in relationships, describing herself as someone who loves intensely but is learning to strike a balance.

Speaking during an appearance on The Morayo Show hosted by Morayo Afolabi-Brown, Akindele admitted that she often operates at emotional extremes, either showing deep affection or completely cutting people off.

“I’m an extremist. I love so hard. I’m real. I’m not perfect—I can be troublesome and tough,” she said.

Reflecting on her behaviour, the actress acknowledged that while she is both proud and cautious of this trait, she recognises the need for moderation.

“I’m not proud of it and at the same time I am. But there has to be a balance,” she added.

Akindele also revealed that filmmaker and colleague, Uzee Usman, once challenged her perspective on leadership and relationships, urging her to be more accommodating of others.

“He told me that as a leader, I should accept people as they are and not expect everyone to react the way I do. That really made me pause and reflect,” she said.

The actress further recalled advice from her late mother, who often reminded her to be patient with others.

“My mum would always say, ‘Not everyone is as fast or as smart as you. Calm down.’ That stayed with me,” she noted.

Emphasising her personal growth, Akindele said she continues to learn daily about managing relationships while prioritising her well-being.

“Human relationships are very important to me, and I’m learning every day. But no matter what, my mental health comes first,” she said.

Her remarks come amid recent public attention following an interaction with fellow actress Toyin Abraham at a film premiere in Lagos, which sparked conversations online.
