Friendly: Undav’s late goal earns Germany 2-1 win over Ghana

A dramatic late strike from Deniz Undav secured a 2-1 victory for Germany over Ghana in Monday’s international friendly, extending the Germans’ winning streak to seven matches.

Germany, who have now taken three wins and two draws from their five encounters with the Black Stars, took an early lead through Arsenal’s Kai Havertz, who calmly converted a penalty after Angelo Stiller’s shot was handled in the box.

Ghana arrived in Germany following a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria, but they showed resilience despite being under constant pressure.

Early in the match, Germany threatened as Havertz latched onto a Florian Wirtz pass, setting up Nick Woltemade, whose curling effort missed the target. Havertz himself later struck the post from a free-kick.

The Black Stars were pinned back for much of the first half, though Antoine Semenyo delivered a dangerous cross from the right that was expertly cleared by Joshua Kimmich.

Germany thought they had doubled their lead before halftime, only for Woltemade to be flagged offside as Wirtz’s finish found the net.

Persistence paid off for the hosts when Stiller’s effort struck Jonas Adjetey’s arm in the box.

After VAR review, Havertz stepped up and confidently dispatched the penalty, sending goalkeeper Ben Asare the wrong way.

The second half saw Julian Nagelsmann make three substitutions, bringing on Antonio Rüdiger, Lennart Karl, and fan-favourite Deniz Undav for Jonathan Tah, Serge Gnabry, and Havertz. Ghana pressed for an equaliser, with Schlotterbeck blocking Adu’s near-post attempt, but they soon found their breakthrough.

Derrick Köhn beat Vagnoman down the flank and squared for substitute Abdul Fatawu, who slotted home for the Black Stars.

Germany responded in the closing stages, with Leroy Sané replacing Woltemade. A pinpoint header from Leon Goretzka found Sané, who cleverly glanced the ball to the back post, where Undav was perfectly positioned to score the decisive goal.

The late drama sealed a hard-fought win for Germany, leaving Ghana to rue missed chances but showing flashes of promise for the future.
