A new Commissioner of Police has taken charge in Oyo State, as Abimbola Olugbenga officially assumed office as the 49th CP of the state command.
Olugbenga succeeds Olufemi Haruna, who held the position from April 2025.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ayanlade Olayinka.
According to the statement, the new CP brings decades of policing experience, having joined the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
A graduate of Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Olugbenga has undergone several professional trainings, including courses at the Police Staff College in Jos, Police College Kaduna, and the National Institute of Police Studies in Abuja.
Throughout his career, he has served in multiple operational and administrative roles across several states, including Lagos, Delta, Borno, Kano, and Oyo.
His previous assignments include serving as Divisional Police Officer in Delta State, Police Component Commander under Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Oyo, and Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Safer Highway Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He also served as Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Weapons and Tactics at the Force Headquarters.
The command described his career as marked by professionalism and strategic leadership.
“His service record reflects proactive policing, effective crime prevention strategies, and strong leadership qualities,” the statement noted.
It added that expectations are high as he takes over the leadership of the command.
“The command is confident that under his leadership, the safety of lives and property will be enhanced, while public trust in policing will continue to grow,” the statement said.
