Nigeria, UK sign agreements to boost business visas

The governments of Nigeria and the United Kingdom have formalised three key agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in migration management, border security, and business relations.

The agreements include a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration Partnership, a Statement of Intent on tackling organised immigration crime and strengthening border security, and another Statement of Intent focused on expanding business visa access for UK companies operating in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, signed the accords during an official visit to the UK, representing the Federal Government.

Speaking at the event, Tunji-Ojo said the agreements reflect Nigeria’s commitment to building a migration system that is structured, transparent, and beneficial to both countries.

“This partnership demonstrates our shared resolve to establish a migration framework that is safe, orderly, and mutually beneficial,” he said.

“We are focused on achieving measurable progress within the next year and setting a standard for future bilateral agreements.”

The minister noted that Nigeria’s collaboration with the UK Home Office has remained strong, adding that easing access to business visas would help drive economic growth and support the country’s long-term development goals.

According to him, “Reducing barriers to legal migration and improving trade opportunities are critical steps toward achieving sustainable economic expansion.”

Also speaking, UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, commended the partnership, describing Nigeria as a leading ally in bilateral relations.

“Nigeria continues to stand out as a key partner due to the depth and scope of our cooperation,” she said.

Similarly, UK Trade Envoy, Florence Eshalomi, emphasised the importance of the business visa agreement, noting that it would create tangible benefits for both nations.

“This strengthened partnership is a bold and necessary step that will support economic growth and deepen commercial ties between our countries,” she said.

The agreements are expected to improve migration governance, curb illegal immigration activities, and make it easier for businesses to operate across both countries, further strengthening diplomatic and economic relations.
