Senegal president wades into AFCON controversy

Senegal President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has taken direct charge of the country’s response after the decision of the Confederation of African Football Appeals Jury to strip the national team of its 2025 African Champion title.

In an official statement released from the Presidency on Wednesday, Senegal expressed “regret and indignation” over the ruling, describing it as a matter of serious national concern.

The situation has escalated beyond sporting authorities, as the President moved to intervene in a dispute that is ordinarily handled by the Senegalese Football Federation, reflecting the sensitivity of the decision at state level.

President Faye has instructed the government, particularly the Minister of Sports, to work closely with the FSF to “take all necessary and prompt measures” aimed at challenging the ruling through legal channels.
