Omar Marmoush struck twice as Manchester City eased past Newcastle United with a 3–1 victory to book a place in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
Newcastle had taken an early lead through Harvey Barnes, whose composed finish in the 18th minute delighted the home crowd and was watched from the stands by Thomas Tuchel.
However, City responded before the break when Savinho equalised, setting the stage for Marmoush to take control in the second half with two well-taken goals.
Despite making sweeping changes to his lineup, City manager Pep Guardiola saw his side dominate much of the contest.
The Spaniard made 10 alterations from the team that drew with Nottingham Forest in the league, while star striker Erling Haaland was not included in the squad as attention shifts to an upcoming UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
Newcastle began brightly and nearly struck first when Anthony Elanga forced a save from goalkeeper James Trafford with a long-range effort.
Moments later, Barnes saw another attempt deflected wide after a quick attacking move involving Will Osula and Sandro Tonali.
The hosts eventually broke the deadlock when Tonali threaded a precise pass through the defence for Barnes, who raced clear and curled a superb shot beyond Trafford into the top corner.
City, however, gradually took control. Savinho tested Aaron Ramsdale with a sharp near-post effort before the equaliser arrived six minutes before halftime.
A low cross from Jérémy Doku struck Savinho in the six-yard box and deflected into the net to bring City level.
Guardiola’s men continued their dominance after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Marmoush latched onto a delivery from Matheus Nunes, controlled calmly and finished from close range to give the visitors the lead.
Newcastle struggled to cope with City’s pressure, although Ramsdale produced several saves, including one to deny Marmoush again while Lewis Hall cleared a rebound off the line.
City eventually sealed the result with 25 minutes remaining when Nunes found Marmoush once more and the Egyptian forward blasted home his second of the night to complete a convincing win.
The result continues City’s remarkable recent record in the competition, while Newcastle suffer their fourth defeat to Guardiola’s side this season and exit another domestic cup at City’s hands.
