The Federal Road Safety Corps has launched an investigation into reports of illegal car racing and stunt driving reportedly carried out by some youths near the National Mosque in Abuja.
The Corps’ Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that the investigation follows complaints from residents who observed unusual racing activities in the area.
“Yes, we have received reports of activities that are illegal or quasi-illegal,” Ogungbemide said.
“The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, has directed the Sector Commander for the Federal Capital Territory, Felix Theman, to investigate these claims and submit a prompt report for decisive action.”
Ogungbemide explained that while the reports are primarily based on residents’ observations, details of the incidents remain inconsistent.
He stressed that such activities, if confirmed, are unlawful and compromise the safety of other road users.
“Nigeria does not permit Formula One-style racing or similar sporting activities on public roads. No organisation or group has been granted permission to conduct car racing or stunt driving within the territory,” he added.
He assured that the FRSC would take appropriate action in line with existing traffic laws once the investigation concludes, and urged the public to continue providing credible information to aid enforcement efforts.
“The corps remains committed to safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads,” Ogungbemide said.
