INEC reschedules 2027 general elections to January, February

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced a major adjustment to Nigeria’s 2027 general election timetable, fixing the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.

The electoral body said the revision follows the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which introduced new timelines for the conduct of elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the commission reviewed its earlier schedule to align with the new legal provisions.

“Consequent upon the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026, the Commission has reviewed and realigned the election timetable to ensure full compliance with the new legal framework,” he said.

Under the revised calendar, Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will now hold on February 6, 2027 — earlier than previously planned.

INEC also confirmed adjustments to off-cycle elections. The Osun State governorship poll, earlier slated for August 8, 2026, has been moved to August 15, 2026.

Haruna explained that although some preparatory activities for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections had already been completed, all outstanding processes would strictly follow the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

“While certain activities have been concluded, the remaining processes will be implemented in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026,” he stated.

The commission further announced that political parties are to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, including the resolution of disputes arising from the exercises.

Campaign activities for Presidential and National Assembly candidates are scheduled to commence on August 19, 2026, while those for Governorship and State Assembly elections will begin on September 9, 2026.

Haruna cautioned political parties and other stakeholders to comply strictly with the new timetable.

“Political parties are strongly advised to adhere to the stipulated timelines. The Commission will not hesitate to enforce compliance in line with the law,” he warned.
He added that campaigns must end 24 hours before the respective election dates, as required by law.

INEC maintained that the revised schedule remains consistent with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2026, urging stakeholders to work collectively to ensure credible and peaceful polls.

“The successful conduct of the 2027 general election is a shared responsibility. We call on all stakeholders to cooperate in delivering peaceful, transparent and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the people,” Haruna said.
