UCL: R’Madrid win over Benfica is for everyone against racism – Tchouaméni

Real Madrid midfielder, Aurelien Tchouameni, has described his side’s progression in the UEFA Champions League as symbolic beyond football, calling it “a victory for everyone who stands against racism” after their playoff triumph over SL Benfica.

Madrid secured a 2-1 win on Wednesday night to complete a 3-1 aggregate success, booking their place in the round of 16.

The encounter, however, unfolded in a tense atmosphere shaped by off-field controversy and renewed conversations around discrimination in the sport.

Reflecting on the performance, Tchouaméni admitted the Spanish giants were below their usual standard but insisted the night carried a deeper meaning.

“We didn’t play our best match of the season, that’s for sure. But I think there are things more important than this match, and more important than football,” he told reporters.

His comments came against the backdrop of visible anti-racism gestures at the Santiago Bernabéu, where banners bearing the message “no to racism” were displayed before kickoff.

The club also confirmed that a supporter was removed from the stadium prior to the game for making a Nazi salute — an act swiftly condemned by the European champions.

With qualification secured, Real Madrid will now turn their attention to the round of 16 draw, where potential opponents include Manchester City and Sporting CP.
