The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation following an unfortunate occurrence during the 11th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, near the finishing line.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, provided clarification on the incident, shedding light on the circumstances.
Omotoso explained that an ambulance, which was part of the official medical emergency response for the marathon, was involved in an incident with a female non-athlete within the event area.
The individual came into contact with the vehicle while it was transporting athletes who had previously required medical attention.
“Officials immediately alerted the ambulance crew to stop upon noticing the situation. The emergency medical team promptly assessed and evacuated the affected individual for on-the-spot care before transferring her to a public health facility for further evaluation,” Omotoso said.
He added that the victim suffered bruises and complained of chest pains but was stabilised at the scene, with her vital signs recorded as stable.
“She is receiving medical care and responding positively to treatment,” he said.
Authorities from the State Ministry of Health and the Sports Commission are closely monitoring the situation, with senior government officials visiting the hospital.
The patient remains stable under professional supervision.
Omotoso reassured the public that a thorough investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The episode drew widespread attention after a video circulated on social media showing a bystander reportedly struck by an ambulance during the marathon.
