The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially released the timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, setting the stage for the country’s next democratic cycle.
According to the commission, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2027.
Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the dates at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, emphasizing that the electoral body had completed its preparations despite uncertainties surrounding the passage of the amended Electoral Act, currently before the National Assembly.
“While we have finalised the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, it is important to note that certain items in our schedule may be affected by the timing of the law’s passage,” Prof. Amupitan said.
Earlier, on February 4, INEC had indicated that delays in the amended Electoral Act could influence some of its planned electoral activities.
The commission, however, reassured Nigerians that it had submitted its proposals to the lawmakers and remained committed to delivering credible elections.
This move follows the precedent set by INEC under Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who had previously fixed general election dates for the next four decades.
The initiative was aimed at reducing voter anxiety, improving electoral planning, and avoiding logistical challenges for both the commission and political stakeholders across the country.
With the election calendar now in place, political parties, candidates, and civil society groups are expected to intensify preparations, while the commission gears up to implement logistical arrangements, including voter education campaigns, deployment of election officials, and distribution of materials nationwide.
