FG renovates soldiers’ quarters in Sokoto

The Federal Government has commissioned newly refurbished residential quarters for corporals and other lower-ranking soldiers at the Giginya Cantonment in Sokoto State, as part of efforts to improve the welfare of personnel of the Nigerian Army.

The renovated accommodation was inaugurated on Saturday by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), who said the project underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions of troops, especially those deployed to security operations in the North-West.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the minister described decent housing as a critical component of troop welfare and operational effectiveness.

“Our soldiers continue to make enormous sacrifices to safeguard the country. Ensuring that they live in safe and comfortable conditions is a duty we must not take lightly,” Musa said.

He noted that non-commissioned officers play a crucial role in maintaining discipline and operational success within the Armed Forces, adding that improved welfare directly boosts morale and performance.

“When personnel are well cared for, it reflects in their discipline, commitment and success in assigned missions,” he added.

Musa also praised the leadership of the Nigerian Army for sustaining infrastructure development across military formations nationwide, despite ongoing security challenges.

The refurbished quarters, which will house corporals and soldiers of lower ranks alongside their families, now feature upgraded facilities, better ventilation and enhanced security measures aimed at easing accommodation pressure within the cantonment.

Earlier, the Commander, 8 Division Garrison, Brigadier General Abdumalik Muhammed, described the project as timely, particularly as troops intensify operations against banditry and other criminal activities in the region.

“This intervention will significantly improve the well-being of our personnel and motivate them to give their best in defence of the nation,” Muhammed said.

Giginya Cantonment hosts the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, a key formation involved in security operations across the North-West, highlighting the importance of sustained welfare-focused initiatives for troops stationed in the area.
