The Kano State Government on Saturday inaugurated a Smart Transport Solution aimed at improving road safety, tracking public transport, and strengthening overall security across the state.
The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and AS&J Company, was launched under the supervision of the Commissioner for Transport, Haruna Dederi, who described it as a “major technological breakthrough” for Kano.
“This system is new in Kano but widely used in major cities around the world. In these megacities, your movements are monitored.
This works like satellite imagery transmitted directly to relevant authorities,” Dederi said.
He explained that the system will initially monitor commercial vehicles, including tricycles, taxis, buses, trailers, and tankers.
“Our dashboards will be accessible to the Police, the Ministry of Transport, and the Cabinet Office.
This ensures coordinated monitoring and proactive security,” he added.
While the program will eventually cover all vehicles, Dederi noted that the first phase will focus on commercial operators.
“Security must evolve with the times. Kano is attracting large numbers of people, and we must employ technological innovation to protect our citizens,” he said.
Dederi also highlighted the role of private investment under Kano’s new transport policy.
“Public-private partnerships in road and rail infrastructure are crucial. Investors will have confidence operating under a clear legal framework,” he stated.
Dr. Aminu Maigari, Head of Operations at AS&J, explained that the tracking app is free to download, while registration and KYC will cost ₦28,000, with the government subsidising 10% for the first one million users.
“The goal is to improve transparency, monitor vehicles and property, and make our transport system more efficient,” Maigari said.
The rollout will occur in phases, with full implementation starting Monday, following awareness sessions for transport unions and local government operators across the state.
