The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has projected widespread dust haze across parts of northern Nigeria and isolated thunderstorms in some southern states for Friday, January 30, 2026.
In its Daily Weather Outlook released on Thursday, NiMet said moderate dust haze is expected in Yobe, Katsina, northern Bauchi, Kano and Jigawa states during the morning, with horizontal visibility likely to range between two and five kilometres.
“Other parts of the northern region are expected to experience slight dust haze in the morning,” the agency stated, adding that “moderate to slight dust haze is expected to persist across the region through the afternoon and evening.”
For the North Central zone, NiMet forecast slight dust haze in the morning, which is expected to continue into the later parts of the day.
In the southern states, the agency predicted generally sunny conditions with patches of cloud in the morning hours. However, it noted a slim chance of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.
“Sunny skies with few cloud patches are expected across most of the South, while isolated thunderstorms with light rainfall may occur in some coastal states,” NiMet said.
The agency cautioned that dust haze could significantly reduce visibility, particularly in the early morning, and advised motorists to exercise caution while driving.
“People with respiratory conditions are advised to take necessary precautions due to the hazy atmosphere,” NiMet warned.
It also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather updates to support effective flight planning and safe operations.
