Barcelona president Laporta slams Dro Fernandez’s ‘unpleasant’ PSG move

Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has described teenage midfielder Dro Fernandez’s decision to leave the club for Paris Saint-Germain as an “unpleasant” episode, especially after an agreement had already been reached over his future at Camp Nou.

The 18-year-old is on the verge of completing a move to French champions PSG.

Reports in Spain suggested the Ligue 1 side will pay Barcelona slightly more than Dro’s €6 million (£7m) release clause as a goodwill payment.

“We will speak when it’s all done, it has been an unpleasant situation,” Laporta said during an interview with Catalunya Radio late on Sunday.

“It came as a surprise because we had agreed on a different solution for when he turned 18,” the Barca president added.

“Surprisingly, his representative told us he couldn’t follow through on what we’d agreed to.”

Laporta hinted that Barcelona may still improve the financial outcome of the deal, suggesting the club could receive as much as €8.5 million from PSG instead of the original release clause amount.

Dro, a central midfielder from Galicia in north-west Spain, joined Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy in 2022. He has since made eight first-team appearances for the Catalan side.

Earlier this month, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick also expressed his frustration over the youngster’s expected exit.

“What I want to say to the young players from La Masia, is we are Barca and one of the best teams in the world,” said the German coach, who handed Dro his senior debut in September 2025.

“We give them the opportunity to train with us, to grow, every day, with the best players in the world. We give them the opportunity, we give them the support, believe in them, the confidence.

“If you want to play for Barca, then (do it) 100 percent with your whole heart. This is what I want to say to everyone who is now with us, or in the future with us, this must be 100 percent.

“These colours, you have to live for them, this is what I want to see. All the others I don’t want, this is what I can say.”
