Barcelona extend Hansi Flick contract until 2028

Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick, has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2028, following a successful spell in charge.

The extension comes after Barcelona’s victory over Real Madrid on Sunday, a result that confirmed their 29th La Liga title and marked Flick’s second league triumph in two seasons at the helm.

The 61-year-old German was already tied to the club for next season, but has now agreed to extend his stay by another year, with an option for an additional season beyond that.

“I’m really happy about this,” Flick said. “They have given me and my team the confidence to work one or two years more.”

Barcelona sealed the championship with three matches still remaining and still have a chance to finish the campaign on 100 points.

“A lot of coaches would be happy if they get a contract of three, four or five years, but in Barca’s case it’s good to limit it. I really appreciate it a lot,” Flick said.

“We go to 2028 and then we’ll see if everything is right, and, if so, we can decide on one more year. The club has the right, and I have the right – I think it’s a good deal.”

The Barcelona coach had a personal loss over the weekend, with his father passing away. A minute’s silence was observed before Sunday’s match in his honour.

Flick took over from Xavi in the summer of 2024 and also guided Barcelona to Copa del Rey success in his debut season.

Before arriving in Spain, he managed Germany for two years after a highly successful spell at Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021.

At Bayern, Flick won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and also led the club to the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2020.
