Serie A: Lecce, Lazio settle for goalless draw

Lecce and Lazio played out a dull 0-0 draw at the Via del Mare, with the home side coming closest to breaking the deadlock while the Biancocelesti rarely threatened.

Boulaye Dia returned to Maurizio Sarri’s starting lineup for the first time since his AFCON triumph, leading a 4-3-3 alongside Mattia Zaccagni and Matteo Cancellieri.

In midfield, Matias Vecino stepped in for the suspended Danilo Cataldi in the Regista role, flanked by Toma Basic and Kenneth Taylor in box-to-box positions.

Lecce dominated the opening half, keeping Lazio pinned in their own half. Lassana Coulibaly’s low strike was brilliantly saved by Ivan Provedel, and Ylber Ramadani nearly stunned the visitors with a long-range effort that rattled the crossbar. Despite these close calls, the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

After the break, Lazio showed a slight uptick in activity. Zaccagni delivered a clever pass to Dia, but the Senegalese striker couldn’t get past Lecce’s Wladimiro Falcone, who rushed off his line to make himself big.

Gustav Isaksen’s counterattack later in the half offered another glimpse of hope, only for Kenneth Taylor’s shot to go astray.

Lecce also had opportunities in the second half, with Walid Cheddira firing wide and Riccardo Sottil’s shot comfortably dealt with by Provedel.

In the end, a goalless draw felt inevitable, underscoring another underwhelming outing for Lazio as they continue to struggle this season.

Lecce, meanwhile, can take some satisfaction from frustrating their high-profile opponents on home soil.
