54 Nigerians seek asylum in Denmark – Official data

A total of 54 Nigerians applied for asylum in Denmark between 2024 and 2025, according to figures released by the Danish Immigration Service.

Data contained in the agency’s latest residence statistics, dated December 31, 2025, showed that 30 Nigerians filed applications in 2024, while 24 did so in 2025, representing a year-on-year decline of about 20 per cent.
“Nigerian applications remained relatively low throughout 2025,” the report indicated.

A breakdown of the 2025 figures revealed that four applications were recorded in January and November, two each in February, March, June, August, September and October, while only one application was made in May and July. No Nigerian sought asylum in April.

Among African countries, Eritrea topped the list in 2025 with 247 applications, followed by Morocco with 61, Algeria with 46, Uganda with 45 and Somalia with 42.

Denmark received 1,959 asylum applications in 2025, down from 2,333 in 2024, while its recognition rate fell sharply to 38 per cent.

“The proportion of applicants granted refugee status in 2025 is the lowest recorded in six years,” the Danish authorities noted.

The report further showed that Denmark revoked or declined to renew asylum permits for 42 persons in 2025, although no Nigerian was affected.

Denmark is known for operating one of Europe’s strictest asylum regimes.

Under its laws, asylum may be granted to persons fleeing persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group, as well as those facing the risk of torture or inhumane treatment if returned to their home countries.
