Lagos task force arrest 281 street urchins

The Lagos State Government has arrested 281 street urchins, locally known as Omotaku, in a renewed enforcement drive aimed at restoring order on major roads and public spaces across the state.

The arrests were confirmed in a statement released on Saturday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

According to Wahab, the suspects have been charged to court following a week-long operation carried out by the Lagos State Task Force in several high-traffic areas.

“The exercise is part of our commitment to keep Lagos roads safe and accessible for both motorists and pedestrians,” he said.

“We will not allow public spaces to be taken over in ways that threaten safety and environmental standards.”

The enforcement covered strategic locations on the Island and Mainland, including Lekki Phase One, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ajah axis, Egbeda, Fadeyi, Surulere, Ojuelegba, Yaba, Jibowu and Lagos Island, among others.

Wahab explained that the operation was designed to reduce traffic-related risks, curb environmental nuisance and enhance overall public order in the state.

“Our responsibility is to protect lives and property. Clearing these areas of street urchins is necessary to prevent accidents and criminal activities,” he added.

The commissioner also urged residents to support the government’s efforts by promptly reporting any disturbance linked to street activities.

“Members of the public should not hesitate to alert the authorities whenever they notice activities that constitute a nuisance. Swift response lines have been provided for this purpose,” he said.

The Lagos State Government noted that the clampdown forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen law enforcement and maintain a clean and orderly urban environment.
