FG commissions solar-powered CCTV centre at 2nd Niger Bridge

The Federal Government has inaugurated a solar-powered Closed-Circuit Television Monitoring Centre at the Second Niger Bridge, marking a significant step in enhancing road security and surveillance infrastructure.

While commissioning the facility, the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, described the project as a key achievement under President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to modernise Nigeria’s transport network and strengthen national security.

The minister also carried out an inspection of the ongoing construction works on the Asaba segment (Section 2A) of the Second Niger Bridge bypass, as well as the rehabilitation of the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway.

He said, “Today, Mr President is doing the 17.5-kilometre by two bypass that will divert traffic away from Asaba township. That is what we call the bypass of the Second Niger Bridge, Section 2A”.

Umahi revealed that the bypass project, which is valued at N179 billion, was redesigned to feature reinforced concrete pavement, solar-powered streetlights and integrated CCTV facilities.

Describing the pace and quality of work as impressive, he said, “The job quality is excellent and the progress is quite encouraging,” adding that the Federal Government intends to commission the first phase of the bypass by April 28.

The minister further explained that the CCTV facility is part of a broader technology-based security framework for federal highways, focused on surveillance and swift emergency response.

According to him, the CCTV monitoring centre at the Second Niger Bridge represents “a microcosm of the macrocosm of the security architecture that Mr President is bringing to all our major roads.”

Commending the initiative, Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aina Adesola, said the project would significantly enhance policing efforts along the busy corridor.

Also speaking, the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Epiphany Azinge, praised the Federal Government for installing the CCTV system, noting that it would help improve security and reduce vandalism.

“It will enhance the security architecture along Asaba and help prevent crime and vandalisation”, he added.
