President Bola Tinubu has showered encomiums on elder statesman and former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, as he marked his 87th birthday, applauding his lifelong devotion to democracy, integrity and public service.
In a special tribute released on Thursday, Tinubu described Akande as one of Nigeria’s foremost progressive politicians whose influence helped to strengthen the country’s democratic foundations.
“Chief Bisi Akande represents the finest traditions of progressive politics in Nigeria. His life has been defined by courage, principle and an unyielding commitment to the public good,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that Akande’s political worldview was firmly shaped by the ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, adding that his passion for good governance, discipline and accountability set him apart throughout his career.
Before entering politics, Akande worked as an accountant with British Petroleum. He later moved into public service, serving as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979 and subsequently as Deputy Governor during the Second Republic.
Reflecting on his time as governor, Tinubu said Akande’s tenure as Osun State governor between 1999 and 2003 left “enduring lessons in leadership, sacrifice and responsible governance.”
“As governor, he governed with prudence and a clear sense of purpose, placing the long-term interest of the people above personal comfort,” Tinubu stated.
The President also highlighted Akande’s pivotal role as the interim national chairman of the APC, crediting him with providing the vision and structure that paved the way for the party’s historic victory in the 2015 general elections.
“Without his steady hands, wisdom and selfless leadership at the formative stage of our party, the APC’s journey to national leadership would have been far more difficult,” Tinubu said.
Describing Akande as a mentor, Tinubu acknowledged the former governor’s personal influence on his political journey. “Chief Akande’s counsel, honesty and encouragement have guided me at critical moments. He is a man whose word carries weight because it is anchored on truth,” he added.
Tinubu further commended Akande’s continued support for his administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that age has not diminished his relevance.
“Even at 87, Baba Akande remains a strong and fearless voice for democracy, social justice and good governance,” the President said.
He concluded by praying for Akande’s continued good health and strength, wishing him many more years of impactful service as he celebrates the milestone birthday.
