FA Cup: Welbeck shines as Brighton knock Man Utd out

Manchester United’s chaotic season took another crushing turn as their FA Cup hopes were extinguished at Old Trafford, with former striker Danny Welbeck once again proving their tormentor in a historic defeat to Brighton.

Still reeling from the dismissal of Ruben Amorim after just 14 uninspiring months, United were under the interim guidance of Darren Fletcher for what is expected to be his final match in temporary charge.

Any hope of lifting silverware to salvage the campaign evaporated as Brighton claimed a long-awaited breakthrough victory in this fixture.

Having lost all six previous FA Cup meetings with the Red Devils, Albion finally ended that unwanted record with a deserved 2-1 third-round win.

Brajan Gruda struck early before Welbeck haunted his boyhood club for the eighth time, rendering Benjamin Sesko’s late header little more than consolation.

The loss marked United’s first third-round FA Cup exit in 12 years and a rare ignominy: elimination at the first hurdle of both domestic cup competitions for the first time since the 1981-82 season. As a result, the club will contest just 40 competitive matches this season, their lowest tally in 111 years.

With a daunting 17-point gap separating United from Premier League leaders Arsenal, the appointment of either Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick as interim boss would leave little to play for beyond league pride, effectively ending realistic trophy ambitions just 11 days into 2026.

Despite a warm reception for Fletcher and a bright opening spell, United’s early momentum was halted by Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.

The stand-in shot-stopper denied Diogo Dalot inside two minutes before parrying a long-range effort from Bruno Fernandes, setting the tone for the visitors.

Brighton capitalised in the 12th minute when Welbeck delivered a teasing cross that Georginio Rutter headed goalwards. Although Lisandro Martínez cleared off the line, Gruda reacted quickest to fire home the opener.

United were fortunate not to fall further behind after a loose pass from Senne Lammens gifted Welbeck a chance, though the goalkeeper redeemed himself with a save before Rutter wasted the rebound from an offside position.

The hosts struggled to respond as the atmosphere flattened, with Fernandes’ inventive free-kick and a Matheus Cunha attempt offering fleeting hope before half-time.

Fletcher’s attempt to rally the crowd after the break produced little improvement, and Brighton doubled their advantage midway through the second half.

Gruda slipped Welbeck through, and the experienced forward took a touch before rifling an unstoppable shot into the top corner in the 65th minute.

United pushed late on, with Sesko heading wide before finally pulling one back in the 85th minute, nodding in from a Fernandes corner to raise brief optimism.

However, any hopes of a dramatic comeback were dashed as teenage substitute Shea Lacey was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for dissent, compounding a miserable afternoon for the home side.

Brighton held firm through the closing stages, sealing a landmark victory and deepening the sense of uncertainty surrounding Manchester United’s faltering campaign.
