FA Cup: Leeds beat Derby County 3-1 in comeback win

Leeds United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a composed 3-1 comeback victory over Derby County at Pride Park.

The visitors were made to work after falling behind early, as Ben Brereton Díaz capitalised on a swift Derby move just two minutes after Joel Piroe had squandered a penalty for Leeds in the first half.

That setback, however, only delayed an eventual response from Daniel Farke’s side.

Leeds emerged with greater intensity after the interval and quickly turned the tie around.

Wilfried Gnonto drew them level in the 55th minute, rifling a powerful first-time effort beyond the goalkeeper.

The pressure continued to build, and Ao Tanaka put the Whites ahead when he reacted quickest to tuck home after Jacob Widell Zetterstrom could only push out Piroe’s effort.

From that point on, Derby struggled to mount any meaningful threat, rarely troubling Karl Darlow in the Leeds goal.

The visitors underlined their superiority deep into stoppage time, when James Justin calmly side-footed in his first goal for the club to seal the win.

The result extends Leeds’ dominance over their East Midlands rivals, with Derby now losing seven of the last nine meetings between the sides in all competitions.

Leeds have also eliminated Derby in each of their last five FA Cup encounters, continuing a trend that stretches back to the late 1960s.

Statistically, the contest reflected Leeds’ control despite the early scare, as they recorded 2.58 expected goals compared to Derby’s 0.42. Zetterstrom’s eight saves — his joint-highest tally for the Rams, prevented a heavier defeat and kept the scoreline respectable.
