Aaron Ramsdale emerged as Newcastle’s hero as the Magpies edged Bournemouth 7-6 on penalties to advance to the FA Cup fourth round, after a thrilling 3-3 draw that stretched through 120 minutes on a freezing afternoon in Tyneside.
The on-loan Southampton goalkeeper made crucial saves from Evanilson, Álex Jiménez, and Bafodé Diakité to secure the dramatic shootout victory.
The match had all the hallmarks of a cup classic. Newcastle appeared to have won it in stoppage time when Harvey Barnes’ effort seemed decisive, only for Marcus Tavernier to snatch an equaliser in the second minute of added time at the end of extra time, forcing penalties.
The game swung back and forth from the start. Newcastle took the lead through Barnes, but Bournemouth quickly responded with goals from Alex Scott and David Brooks, before Anthony Gordon’s late penalty restored parity for the hosts.
Newcastle coach Andoni Iraola rotated heavily, but it was one of the few retained players, Junior Kroupi, who made an early impact, his fifth-minute strike smothered by Ramsdale after a neat Enes Ünal knockdown.
Moments later, Bournemouth’s Yoane Wissa curled a dangerous effort that was smartly tipped away by Djordje Petrovic.
Ramsdale continued to keep Newcastle in the game, blocking Kroupi’s fierce strike after Evanilson’s first-touch setup and denying a near-certain chance when Tino Livramento misplayed a cross in his own box.
Evanilson eventually found the net for Bournemouth on 55 minutes, only to be flagged offside, while Sven Botman’s header rattled the crossbar shortly after.
Bournemouth took full advantage of their opportunities as Evanilson and Brooks combined for Scott to tap in at the far post. Brooks later capitalised on a defensive slip, curling a precise shot past Ramsdale after Botman blocked his initial attempt.
Petrovic pulled off two stunning saves against Gordon, but the former Everton man finally converted a stoppage-time penalty after being brought down by Ramsdale.
Just when Newcastle thought they had sealed it, Barnes’ deep header from Gordon’s cross appeared to win the tie, only for Tavernier to keep Bournemouth alive and send the match to a nail-biting penalty shootout.
