Heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been hospitalised following a road traffic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash occurred on Monday morning in the Makun area, just before the Danco Filling Station and ahead of the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the boxer was among those injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck.
The vehicle was reportedly part of a two-car convoy, with a second SUV carrying members of his security detail.
An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, said Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy consisting of a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Anthony Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another passenger beside him,” Orojo said.
“Other road users and I assisted in the rescue before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. Unfortunately, two passengers in the Lexus died instantly.”
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said Joshua and other injured persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
“The Ogun State Police Command confirms a road traffic accident that occurred today in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway,” Oluseyi stated.
“Anthony Joshua and other injured persons were involved in the crash and have been taken to the hospital. Further updates will be communicated.”
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased had not been officially released, while investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.
