Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface, is expected to undergo knee surgery after struggling with a persistent injury.
The 25-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, but his campaign has been hampered by fitness issues.
Boniface has been unable to complete a full match for Bremen this season, managing just 326 minutes of action for the Bundesliga side.
Reports from German outlet BILD indicate that Leverkusen’s medical team has advised surgical intervention after the injury failed to heal as anticipated.
The striker picked up the knock during a training session in early December. Although it was initially thought to be a minor setback, the discomfort has continued, raising concerns.
Discussions are ongoing between Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Werder Bremen’s Clemens Fritz as both clubs seek a coordinated decision on the next steps before Christmas.
Given Boniface’s history of two previous cruciate ligament injuries, another operation could rule him out for the remainder of the season.
