Airtel, Starlink partner to boost Africa’s mobile connectivity

Airtel Nigeria has highlighted that recent innovations in satellite technology, largely driven by SpaceX’s Starlink, have made satellite-based telecommunications both practical and affordable.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, shared this insight while addressing journalists during the announcement of Airtel Africa’s collaboration with Starlink to roll out satellite-to-mobile services across the continent.

Balsingh explained that telecom providers had traditionally depended on broadband cable networks for mobile connectivity, with satellite communication considered costly and less reliable.

He emphasized that Starlink’s advanced and streamlined satellite technology has now overcome these challenges.

He added that the partnership will allow Airtel to deliver satellite-to-mobile services in all 14 African markets where it operates, particularly targeting regions with limited or no terrestrial network coverage through SpaceX’s Starlink platform.

The satellite solution is designed to provide data speeds up to 20 times faster directly to smartphones. With a constellation of more than 650 low-Earth orbit satellites, Airtel has become the first mobile network operator in Africa to offer Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell services, ensuring consistent connectivity for rural, remote, and underserved communities.

Airtel emphasized that the collaboration reflects its enduring commitment to closing Africa’s digital divide and ensuring that geographical location no longer restricts access to communication, opportunities, or vital services.

Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Africa, said the partnership aligns with the company’s mission to enhance customer experience and broaden reliable connectivity.

“Airtel Africa remains committed to delivering a great experience to our customers by improving access to reliable and contiguous mobile connectivity solutions,” Taldar said.

He further explained that Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology complements existing terrestrial networks and extends coverage to areas where conventional infrastructure is difficult to deploy.

“We are excited about this collaboration, which will set a new standard for service availability across all our 14 markets,” he added.

Stephanie Bednarek, Starlink’s Vice President of Sales, called the initiative a major breakthrough for connectivity in Africa.

“For the first time, people across Africa will stay connected in remote areas where terrestrial coverage cannot reach,” she said. “Through our agreement with Airtel Africa, we are delivering life-changing connectivity and next-generation high-speed broadband that will unlock faster access to essential services.”

Both Airtel and Starlink indicated that they plan to explore additional collaborative efforts beyond the initial rollout to further digital inclusion and expand connectivity across the continent.
