Rob and Michele Reiner died as a result of “multiple sharp force injuries,” newly released records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner in the United States, have confirmed.
The documents list the manner of death as “homicide,” indicating the couple were killed by another person. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been accused of fatally stabbing both parents.
Sharp force injuries refer to wounds inflicted by sharp or pointed objects. During a news conference on Tuesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney alleged that Nick Reiner used a knife in the attack.
According to the medical examiner’s report released on Wednesday, the renowned filmmaker and his wife died on Sunday, December 14, the same day their bodies were discovered at their West Los Angeles residence and authorities were alerted.
A source said the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, went to check on her parents around 3 p.m. local time that day and found their bodies.
She then crossed the street to her own home and informed a friend who was staying with her, asking the friend to call 911.
Police said the bodies were located in the master bedroom of the home. The medical examiner’s records also indicate that the Reiners’ remains are ready to be released to their next of kin.
Investigators have not disclosed what may have led to the alleged killings. However, a source familiar with the matter said Nick Reiner was seen arguing with his father at a holiday party on Saturday night at Conan O’Brien’s Los Angeles home. Michele Singer Reiner was also present at the gathering.
Nick Reiner appeared briefly in court on Wednesday, where his arraignment was scheduled for January 7.
